Dear Lackland ISD Families and Students,
Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing summer. Whether you are returning to our district or joining us for the very first time, we are absolutely thrilled to welcome you to the Lackland ISD family.
It has been a busy and productive summer on our campuses. Our teachers and staff enjoyed some well-deserved rest, engaged in professional development to bring fresh ideas into the classroom, and prepared inspiring learning spaces for our students. We have also welcomed several talented new staff members to both our elementary and junior-senior high school teams who are eager to make this year exceptional.
To our military families: thank you for your service and dedication to our country. We recognize the unique opportunities and challenges that come with military life, and we are deeply honored that you have entrusted us with your child’s education. Our commitment is to provide a nurturing, high-quality learning environment where your child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

SAN ANTONIO, TX — To kick off the 2026–2027 school year, Lackland Independent School District held its annual Convocation, bringing together educators, administrators, and staff for an inspiring launch ahead of the first day of classes. This year's event centered on a transformative theme: safely navigating and embracing modern technology to enrich student learning.
The highlight of the event was a compelling keynote address delivered by renowned creative technologist and AI specialist Christian Jackson. Jackson, who serves as the CEO of Edapt, is well-regarded for his work in bridging the digital divide and helping public school districts understand artificial intelligence.
During his address, Jackson spoke directly to the mixed emotions often surrounding artificial intelligence in the classroom. Rather than viewing the technology as a replacement for human teachers, Jackson demonstrated how educators can leverage AI tools to drastically cut down on administrative burdens, such as building base frameworks for lesson planning and optimizing daily scheduling.

Congratulations to three members of our Child Nutrition team on successfully completing the Cooking for Healthy Kids Farm Fresh Culinary Workshop, presented by the Culinary Institute of America and the Texas Department of Agriculture.
Held at the Culinary Institute of America's San Antonio campus in the historic Pearl district, the intensive five-day workshop featured daily cooking demonstrations, hands-on culinary activities, and classroom instruction led by experienced, certified culinary trainers with nutrition expertise. Throughout the week, participants prepared approximately 100 healthy, flavorful recipes while building practical skills to enhance school meal programs. Upon completion, each participant earned 23.75 continuing education hours (2.375 CEUs) through the School Nutrition Association.
We are proud of our team members (Maricela Reyna, Claudia Ortiz, and Erica Campos for their commitment to professional growth and their dedication to providing fresh, nutritious, and appealing meals for our students. Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment!

Let’s just say… it was some of our best work yet! 😉 We worked together, communicated, solved problems, and—most importantly—had a lot of fun along the way!

Lackland Independent School District welcomed its incoming educators for the 2026–2027 academic year with staff development starting August 3, 2026, leading up to the first day of school on August 12, 2026. New teacher orientation sessions focus on district technology, curriculum standards, and unique military-family community needs at JBSA-Lackland. |
Faculty and staff at Lackland ISD recently participated in an on-site CPR training session on Lackland Air Force Base to prepare for the school year. Led by professional safety instructors, the hands-on program equips educators and school personnel with critical life-saving skills to handle sudden medical emergencies.
Why School Staff Training Matters
- Immediate Response: Trained staff can provide vital chest compressions and support before professional emergency medical services arrive.
- Mandated Roles: While general classroom teachers may not face a universal state mandate, Texas law strictly requires athletic coaches, physical education instructors, nurses, and band directors to hold valid certification.

Parent Square Notifications
Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.
Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.
The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Virginia Allred Stacey Junior/Senior High School holds its annual Prep Day to help students on JBSA-Lackland get ready for the new school year. Students pick up class schedules, turn in digital agreements, grab PE clothes, and sort out lockers before classes begin.
What Happens on Prep Day

Schedule Pick-Up: Students get their official class lists and room numbers.

Tech and Forms: Kids and parents handle iPad agreements, device pick-ups, and emergency paperwork.

Gear and Goods: Families can buy PE uniform sets and purchase early-bird yearbooks.

Campus Life: Students check out sign-ups for school clubs, sports, and student organizations.

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The hallways of Lackland Elementary School buzzed with anticipation and back-to-school energy as families gathered for the highly anticipated Meet the Teacher Night. Hosted just ahead of the new school year, the event offered students and parents a vital opportunity to connect with educators, ease first-day jitters, and build foundational relationships within the close-knit Lackland Independent School District (ISD) community.
For families of the roughly 600–700 students attending the campus—which primarily serves military dependents on Lackland Air Force Base—the evening is a critical stepping stone. Given the unique transitions and deployments inherent to military life, creating a welcoming and stable introduction to the school year remains a top priority for Principal Terry Leija and her dedicated faculty.
The event was thoughtfully structured to provide a personalized experience for every grade level:

Pre-K and Kindergarten: The school's youngest learners gathered directly in the elementary cafeteria to "Meet the Team," allowing them to socialize and become familiar with their teachers in a spacious, low-pressure environment.

1st through 5th Grade: Older students and their guardians headed straight into the grade-level buildings. Class lists posted inside the hallways guided families to their specific classrooms, where students eagerly dropped off their school supplies and checked out their new desks.
The personal connections forged during the evening set a reassuring tone for the district's planned "soft start" schedule, ensuring students can step onto campus on day one feeling fully prepared, confident, and excited to learn.

3 students were awarded a "Random Acts of Kindness" Award on Day 1 for being helpful to a classmate without being asked to. We love to see students showing their kindness and integrity as soon as they arrive!

Lackland Elementary hosted a vibrant summer art camp from July 27 to 31, where young students explored their creativity through collaborative outdoor fence murals, clay sculpting, canvas painting, and diverse multimedia projects.
Camp Activities and Highlights:
Outdoor Mural: Students worked together to paint a large, colorful mural on the school's outdoor fence.
Clay Sculpting: Kids shaped and molded wet clay into unique 3D figures and large vessels.
Canvas Painting: Campers used brushes and acrylic paints to create original works on stretched canvas.
Multimedia Projects: Participants combined wood, yarn, and other items to build mixed-media art pieces.
Student Experience:
Campers shared ideas and helped each other finish big projects.
Children learned new art skills in a fun and relaxed setting.
Every student took home multiple handmade art pieces on the final day.

Students and teachers are off to a great start at Lackland Elementary! We have been reviewing the procedures for the library while having some fun with a couple of kid jokes and a movement game to get started. We also enjoyed a book about treating books right and remembering to leave our dragons at home. Ha! Great days are ahead and we will make the most of each one! |

Both the JBSA Lackland Library and the San Antonio Public Library have great Homework Help resources for grades Kinder–College, and for Parents!
