The National Association of School Resource Officers encourages schools and communities to recognize the valuable work of their school resource officers (SROs) during National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on February 15 of every year.
We established National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day in 2022, after receiving frequent inquiries from schools around the country regarding the most appropriate day to recognize their SROs. NASRO encourages schools and communities to take time on Feb. 15 of every year to let their SROs know how much they appreciate the work these officers do to bridge gaps between law enforcement and youth and to keep schools safe.
An official proclamation appears below.
The SRO assignment is unique within the law enforcement profession. These sworn law enforcement officers fill a three-part role, serving as informal mentors or counselors, law educators, and law enforcement officers to support the students and communities they serve. They are valuable and essential members of the education community who deserve unwavering respect and support from the public in the pursuit of keeping schools and students safe.
Thank you to LISD SRO's Mrs. Koscinski and Mr. Galbadores!

President's Day federal holiday is celebrated on the third Monday in February. The holiday commemorates all the former US presidents' achievements and sacrifices. Interestingly, the day is celebrated on the same day as George Washington's birthday. The holiday is also celebrated a day after Abraham Lincoln's birth date. In the early 19th century, the day was acknowledged as a fasting and prayer day. People would offer prayers to God and ask for protection over their president.
The history of the Presidents' Day holiday dates back in 1800 after the death of George Washington. People celebrated his birthday on February 22 as a way to remember the first president in American history. In 1879, Washington's Birthday was signed into law as a federal holiday.
In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act shifted the day to be celebrated on the third Monday of February every year. The day also changed its name to Presidents' Day as a way to commemorate all the presidents of the United States.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Lackland ISD, we are committed to providing every student with the highest quality education and the opportunities they need to succeed. One of the most important factors in student success is consistent, daily school attendance.
Regular attendance helps students build strong academic foundations, develop positive habits, and stay connected to their teachers and peers. When students miss school, even occasionally, they can fall behind in learning and may struggle to catch up. Over time, missed instructional time can have a significant impact on student achievement, graduation readiness, and long-term success.
We have recently seen a decline in student attendance across our district, and we need your partnership and support to help reverse this trend. Your encouragement and commitment to ensuring your child attends school every day, on time, makes a meaningful difference.
In Texas, student attendance is also directly tied to school funding. School districts receive funding based on daily student attendance. When students are absent, it not only affects their individual learning but also reduces resources that support teachers, academic programs, student services, and extracurricular opportunities for all students.
While daily attendance is critical, student health and safety remain a top priority. If your child is sick, please keep them at home so they can recover and to help prevent the spread of illness to others. Once they are well, we encourage them to return to school as soon as possible and communicate with their campus to make up any missed work.
Working together, we can ensure that our students are present, engaged, and prepared for success. Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and commitment to your child’s education and to the success of our entire school community.
If you have questions or need assistance with attendance concerns, please contact your child’s campus. We are here to help.
Sincerely,
Dr. Burnie Roper
Superintendent

Lackland ISD continues to strive toward improving communication.
ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:
*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app
*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events
*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents
For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.
Parent Square Notifications
Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.
Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.
The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Students in Ms. Sims' English I class created Marble Runs in small groups and documented the process.
Students rotated leadership roles and worked within the constraints of the challenge to create a working
race track for marbles. Students then completed an essay with photo evidence of the evolution of the design process
and difficulties encountered to explore technical writing.

Our students had a great time during WIN time exploring circuits and robots! They were learning through hands-on play, problem-solving, and teamwork while having fun at the same time

Cutting hearts, writing notes, and reading about love and kindness made this week a treat! We also had a puppet show celebrating kindness with a groundhog and a moose. Fourth grade students were eager to be puppeteers and even narrators. What a great way to practice reading while learning to project your voice and move a puppet!
Students are also learning more about Don Tate, an author/illustrator, that is visiting our school in March. Mrs. Leija will be purchasing a Don Tate book for each class to enjoy after getting the author's signature. You may purchase a Don Tate book at a local bookstore or on-line to send to school with your child, and Don Tate will sign their book. This is a fun opportunity and promotes reading.
Next week, I will share instructions with our classes about creating a "Bootle Buddy" to celebrate Read Across America and the joy of reading. A flyer will be sent home and shared with families, as well. Happy reading!

Happy February! As we step into this month of love, kindness, and community, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and involvement in your child’s educational journey. February brings exciting opportunities for learning and connection, from engaging classroom activities to special events that celebrate growth and creativity.
The State Goal for Gifted Service reads:
"Students who participate in services designed for gifted/talented students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication as evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment. High School graduates who have participated in services for gifted/talented students will have produced products and performances of professional quality as part of their program services."

Our GT students are served in a variety of ways, depending on the campus and grade level. Our ultimate goal is to make learning fun and challenging for each of our students, while helping them to grow their critical thinking skills.
Class work and projects for GT students should never be MORE work; it should be DIFFERENT work! This is the heart of differentiated instruction. Our teachers provide differentiated instruction to our GT students throughout the school day. The information below is a simple introduction to what differentiated instruction is.

Registration is now open for KLRN's Play and Learn program!
Play & Learn offers families (with young children) an opportunity to connect in a family-friendly, educational environment. At each session, participants receive children’s books, take-home activities, and materials to use in their homes.
Families meet once a week to participate in parallel play experiences, and explore PBS KIDS programs, apps and resources. Families also attend workshops that explore integrating science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) at home, and learn about developmental milestones.
This year, we have three locations around town for families to attend:
