School Attendance Matters

Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Lackland ISD, we are committed to providing every student with the highest quality education and the opportunities they need to succeed. One of the most important factors in student success is consistent, daily school attendance.
Regular attendance helps students build strong academic foundations, develop positive habits, and stay connected to their teachers and peers. When students miss school, even occasionally, they can fall behind in learning and may struggle to catch up. Over time, missed instructional time can have a significant impact on student achievement, graduation readiness, and long-term success.
We have recently seen a decline in student attendance across our district, and we need your partnership and support to help reverse this trend. Your encouragement and commitment to ensuring your child attends school every day, on time, makes a meaningful difference.
In Texas, student attendance is also directly tied to school funding. School districts receive funding based on daily student attendance. When students are absent, it not only affects their individual learning but also reduces resources that support teachers, academic programs, student services, and extracurricular opportunities for all students.
While daily attendance is critical, student health and safety remain a top priority. If your child is sick, please keep them at home so they can recover and to help prevent the spread of illness to others. Once they are well, we encourage them to return to school as soon as possible and communicate with their campus to make up any missed work.
Working together, we can ensure that our students are present, engaged, and prepared for success. Thank you for your continued partnership, support, and commitment to your child’s education and to the success of our entire school community.
If you have questions or need assistance with attendance concerns, please contact your child’s campus. We are here to help.
Sincerely,

Dr. Burnie Roper

National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week 2026 (#NSCW26) is Feb. 2-6, 2026, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. The theme is: School Counselors Amplify Student Success. National School Counseling Week, presented by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. National School Counseling Week is always celebrated the first full week in February. Multiple resources, many of them free, are available to help you celebrate National School Counseling Week.

School counseling is 100-plus years old. It evolved shaped by various economic, social and educational forces guided by the work of many individuals. By embracing knowledge from the past, we can learn how school counseling evolved from a position, to a service, to a program. By welcoming the future we can combine the insights gained from the past with new knowledge, enabling us to continue to develop and fully implement comprehensive school counseling programs in every school district in the country.
counselor
We proudly salute and acknowledge the outstanding work of our two counselors at Stacey Jr/Sr High School: Genevieve Medellin-Keller (Ms. MK) and Mike Flores (Coach Flores).
Ms. MK has been a valued member of Lackland ISD since 2007 and has served as the high school counselor since 2017. Prior to that role, she taught several classes of high school Spanish. Coach Flores has been with Lackland ISD since 2004 and is currently in his third year as the junior high counselor. Before coming to Stacey, he served as a counselor at the elementary campus.
We are grateful for their dedication, guidance, and continued support of our students and school community.

Lackland Elementary School would like to recognize and thank it's two counselors!
Tanesha Ramirez came to Lackland in 2024 and served first at the Jr High as the 7th grade ELAR teacher for one year before transitioning to the Elementary school as the PK-2nd grade counselor this school year. Veronica Cervantes came to Lackland in 2018 and served as a Spanish Teacher at Stacey Jr/Sr High. In 2021, she transitioned from teaching to school counseling and returned to Lackland as the elementary school counselor for 3rd - 5th grade.
Your service and dedication to our students and staff is truly valued and appreciated!

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.
Parent Square Notifications

Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.

Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.

The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Library Scoop

World Read Aloud Day was a bit hit on Wednesday, February 4th with students, teachers, and our counselors sharing books they love with each other! Absolutely awesome! Readers are leaders, and we are shining!
We also celebrated Groundhog's Day in the library on Monday, February 2nd with our younger students. Folks think the groundhog is a weather prognosticator, but our littles learned this rodent comes out of hibernation looking for some food...Ha!
On Thursday, our second and third graders were delighted to meet Mrs. Keranen from the Texas Wildlife Association with wonderful information about prey and predators, animal signals, animal adaptations and so much more. Our students were fascinated and learned a lot! Thank you to TWA for sharing your presenters at our school to improve our knowledge about wildlife and science.
Finally, I am so excited to announce our upcoming visit with author/illustrator Don Tate! He will visit all of our students on Tuesday, March 3rd! He has written and illustrated 20+ books! He has books that were nominated for the Bluebonnet Book award and other prestigious honors for his writing. We will hear a few of his books before his visit. If you would like your child to get an autograph from Don Tate, I encourage you to purchase a Don Tate book at a bookstore or on-line to bring in for his visit. Mrs. Leija will be purchasing one book for each classroom at Lackland Elementary, as well. Whoo hoo! Happy reading!

Greetings To Our GT Community

Happy February! As we step into this month of love, kindness, and community, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and involvement in your child’s educational journey. February brings exciting opportunities for learning and connection, from engaging classroom activities to special events that celebrate growth and creativity.

The State Goal for Gifted Service reads:
"Students who participate in services designed for gifted/talented students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication as evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment. High School graduates who have participated in services for gifted/talented students will have produced products and performances of professional quality as part of their program services."

Texas State Plan for Gifted & Talented Students

GT Service in LISD

Our GT students are served in a variety of ways, depending on the campus and grade level. Our ultimate goal is to make learning fun and challenging for each of our students, while helping them to grow their critical thinking skills.
Class work and projects for GT students should never be MORE work; it should be DIFFERENT work! This is the heart of differentiated instruction. Our teachers provide differentiated instruction to our GT students throughout the school day. The information below is a simple introduction to what differentiated instruction is.

Registration is now open for KLRN's Play and Learn program!

Play & Learn offers families (with young children) an opportunity to connect in a family-friendly, educational environment. At each session, participants receive children’s books, take-home activities, and materials to use in their homes.

Families meet once a week to participate in parallel play experiences, and explore PBS KIDS programs, apps and resources. Families also attend workshops that explore integrating science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) at home, and learn about developmental milestones.

This year, we have three locations around town for families to attend:

Tuesdays starting March 24
City of San Antonio SE Service Center
1318 SE Loop 410 ACC Rd.
San Antonio, TX 78220

Thursdays starting March 26
