Honoring the Unsung Heroes of Lackland ISD: Happy National Custodian Day!

At Lackland Independent School District, a great school year relies on excellent teachers, dedicated administrators, and enthusiastic students. However, there is a foundational team working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our district running smoothly, safely, and beautifully. On October 2nd, Lackland ISD proudly celebrates National Custodian Day to honor the incredible individuals who maintain our facilities and protect our community.
The Backbone of Our Schools
The Lackland ISD Custodial Department plays a truly crucial role in the daily education of our students. Long before the morning bells ring and well after the final buses depart, our custodial team is on the move. They provide our students, teachers, and staff with clean, safe classrooms and facilities that are fully conducive to learning.
From high-touch point disinfection and detailed floor care to managing unexpected maintenance needs, their daily efforts ensure that health and safety remain a top priority. In a year filled with learning, growth, and community events, our custodians establish the stable environment our Eagles need to thrive.
More Than Just Maintenance
Beyond keeping our hallways sparkling and our classrooms sanitized, the custodial staff are vital members of the Lackland ISD family. They greet students with warm smiles in the mornings, offer encouraging words in the hallways, and show an unwavering commitment to the well-being of everyone on campus. They do not just maintain buildings; they build a supportive community.

Shaping the Futures of Our Military-Connected Students: Lackland ISD Celebrates World Teachers’ Day

On World Teachers’ Day, Lackland Independent School District proudly joins the global community in honoring our exceptional educators. This year’s international theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” holds a deeply personal meaning for our schools. At Lackland ISD, our teachers do more than instruct—they serve as the bedrock of stability, excellence, and support for military-connected families.
Teaching in a military school district requires a unique blend of academic expertise and profound empathy. Our educators welcome students from all over the world, navigating the unique challenges of military life, deployments, and frequent relocations. By creating safe, consistent, and high-achieving classrooms, Lackland ISD teachers ensure that every child—regardless of how long they are with us—receives a world-class education. They do not just teach subjects; they build resilient leaders.
This 60th anniversary milestone reminds us that supporting our teachers is vital to the success of our entire community. From implementing innovative classroom strategies to providing the emotional stability our students need during transitions, the dedication of our faculty defines the spirit of Lackland ISD.

Celebrating Leadership and Mentorship: Lackland ISD Honors National Coaches Day!

On October 6, Lackland Independent School District proudly joins schools across the country to celebrate National Coaches Day. Originally established by President Richard Nixon in 1972 through Proclamation 4157, this special day is dedicated to recognizing the men and women who guide, inspire, and shape the lives of young individuals through sports and academic activities.
At Lackland ISD, our coaches are much more than strategists on the field or instructors on the sidelines. Serving a unique community at Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA)-Lackland, our educators understand the distinct experiences of military-connected students. They step up not only as sports leaders but also as crucial mentors, counselors, and friends who teach invaluable life skills. Through every early morning practice and hard-fought competition, they instill discipline, a strong work ethic, and the true meaning of teamwork.
The impact of a great coach stretches far beyond a win-loss record. By building character and fostering resilience, the educators at Lackland ISD build better athletes and better people whose influence will echo for decades. October 6 is also recognized as National Instructional Coaches Day, allowing us to simultaneously highlight the fantastic behind-the-scenes work of our academic and instructional coaches who drive student achievement in the classroom.
We encourage all students, parents, and community members to take a moment this week to say "thank you" to the past and present coaches who have made a difference in their lives. Whether they coach on the court, the field, or in academic competitions, their dedication keeps the heart of Lackland ISD beating strong.

Culinary Students Showcase Their Talents at Bexar Builds Summit.

Students in Ms. Hassell’s 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th period Culinary Arts classes recently had the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills by preparing an assortment of delicious desserts for the Bexar Builds Summit, sponsored by the Bexar County Education Coalition (BCEC).
The Bexar Builds Summit brings together education, business, workforce, and community leaders from across Bexar County to build a stronger, more unified voice around the future of education, workforce development, and our region.
Our Culinary Arts students prepared the following desserts for the event:
  • Dulce de Leche Banana Pudding
  • Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Cups with Gingersnap Cookies
  • Mexican Sheet Cake Brownies with Fudge Icing
  • Café con Leche Muffins
We are incredibly proud of our Culinary Arts students for representing Lackland ISD with such creativity, professionalism, and pride. Opportunities like this allow our students to apply the skills they are learning in the classroom to authentic, real-world experiences while contributing to important community events.
The Culinary Arts team did an outstanding job! A special thank-you to Chef Hassell and Dr. Shelby for their leadership, coordination, and support in making this opportunity possible for our students.
We are proud of our students and grateful for the opportunity to showcase the exceptional talents of our Lackland ISD family!

First grade learning about push and pull with a pinata

The kids had so much fun learning about pushes and pulls today! We used a piñata to help demonstrate how objects can move. The kids observed how the piñata moved when we pushed it and then compared that to how it moved when we pulled the strings. It was a fun, hands-on way to bring our science learning to life!

Our Pre-K friends practiced their fine motor skills by using small clothespins to create whiskers on cat faces as we learned about pets this week. This hands-on activity helped strengthen little fingers and build hand-eye coordination while having fun!

Library Scoop

This has been a wonderful week of exploring new books, shopping for journals, pens, and erasers, and lots of eager students! Students are excited about new books to read! And many of our teachers were gifted with books from their wishlists. The Storybook Pumkin Family Literacy Project is coming up this month, and students that create a Storybook Pumpkin will receive a book for their efforts. These books are acquired using some of our Book Fair profit. Thank you parents and families for your support of our Book Fair! Happy reading everyone!

GIFTED AND TALENTED FAMILY NEWSLETTER | OCTOBER 2026

An October Reset for GT Families

Helping busy minds find balance as the school year gains momentum
By October, the excitement of a new school year may begin to fade. Assignments become more challenging, schedules feel busier, and the next school break can seem far away. Gifted students may experience this part of the year especially intensely as they balance high expectations, perfectionism, busy minds, and the everyday demands of school.
Return to the Basics
•  Protect sleep. A consistent bedtime and time away from screens help busy minds and bodies recover from the school day.
•  Choose water and nourishing meals. Healthy habits support concentration, steady energy, and emotional regulation.
•  Make time to move and play. Outdoor activity and unstructured play provide an important mental break and help relieve stress.
•  Create space for conversation. Ask what felt exciting, difficult, or surprising - not only what grade your child earned.
•  Celebrate effort and growth. Notice perseverance, creative thinking, thoughtful questions, and lessons learned from mistakes.
•  Leave room for rest. Gifted children do not need to be challenged every moment. Quiet time and simply doing nothing can restore creativity and curiosity.
One Helpful Question
Try asking: “What is one thing you worked through today, even when it was difficult?”
October can feel long, but it also gives families an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and reset. Sometimes the best way to help a child move forward is to pause, breathe, and begin again.
