National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15, celebrating the history, culture, and vital contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.
Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month at Lackland ISD
From September 15 to October 15, our schools proudly join the nation in observing National Hispanic Heritage Month. This 30-day period is a time to honor the rich cultures, diverse histories, and lasting achievements of individuals whose ancestors trace their roots to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Why September 15?
The celebration begins in the middle of September for a special historical reason. September 15 marks the independence anniversary of five Latin American nations: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates its independence day on September 16, and Chile follows on September 18.
Honoring Our Community and Students
At Lackland ISD, our vibrant community reflects the profound cultural impact and deep history of Hispanic and Latino populations, especially here in Texas. Throughout this month, our classrooms will explore these connections through art, literature, history, and music. We encourage students, staff, and families to engage in local learning opportunities and campus events that highlight the global contributions of Hispanic leaders, artists, scientists, and innovators.

Honoring Our Heritage: Lackland ISD Celebrates Constitution Day on September 17
On Thursday, September 17, 2026, Lackland ISD students and staff joined classrooms across the nation to observe Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. This significant day marks the 239th anniversary of September 17, 1787, when 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia signed the U.S. Constitution, establishing the fundamental framework of our American democracy.
As a district proudly serving military-connected families on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, this observance holds a deep personal meaning for our community. Many of our students' parents have taken a solemn oath to support and defend this very document.
Why We Celebrate
While Constitution Day is a national observance rather than a federal holiday with a day off, it carries an important educational mission. Federal law mandates that all publicly funded educational institutions host specialized programming to teach students about the history, principles, and lasting impact of the U.S. Constitution.
Furthermore, in Texas public schools, Constitution Day serves as the gateway to Celebrate Freedom Week. This state-designated week emphasizes the values on which our country was founded and the sacrifices made for freedom, with specific focus on the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights.

Tech Heroes Behind the Screens: Lackland ISD Celebrates National IT Professionals Day was Tuesday, September 15, 2026
Lackland ISD proudly celebrates National IT Professionals Day. Observed annually on the third Tuesday of September, this special day gives us the opportunity to recognize and thank the dedicated technology experts who keep our classrooms connected, our data secure, and our district running smoothly.
From Lackland Elementary to Stacey Jr./Sr. High School, technology is woven into every aspect of modern education. Our IT professionals work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that students and teachers have the digital tools they need to succeed every single day.
The Superheroes of Digital Learning
The role of our technology team goes far beyond fixing occasional computer glitches. In a modern military-connected school district, our IT staff manages a complex ecosystem that impacts every student and staff member:

Our students had the opportunity to showcase their culinary skills, creativity, and dedication while representing our school with pride. Competing in the Recipe Challenge gave them a valuable opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a hands-on setting, demonstrate their talents, and gain experience alongside other aspiring young chefs.
A special congratulations to Chef Hasel for supporting and guiding our students throughout this experience. We are grateful for the time, encouragement, and expertise that helped make this opportunity possible.
We are so proud of our culinary students for stepping up to the challenge and representing our school at the ESC-20 Product Show. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment are truly something to celebrate!

Building Strong Partnerships
Lackland ISD values teamwork between home and school. Parents, families, and community members work together to support student safety, learning, and emotional health. The district holds regular Town Hall meetings so families can share ideas and solve problems with school leaders.

The Stacey Cross Country team traveled to Moulton, TX on Saturday and competed in the 38th Annual Moulton Cross Country Meet. The girls kicked things off by having everyone finish in the top 25, led by Selah Ventura (6th; 14:13) and Makayla Mandujano (17th; 15:18). Up next, the boys went out and had all six runners finish in the top 17 led by Jarred Dunn (2nd; 17:56) and Roel Garcia (7th; 19:48). The team including Gabriel Garcia, Riley Silva, Cameron Westerlund and Lazaro Barajas placed 1st overall to win the meet. In the Junior High race, Joshua Philpott placed 4th overall with a time of 12:42. Congratulations to all the runners who went out and competed this week!! |
Students practiced the proper handwashing skill using Glo Germ to demonstrate how effectively handwashing removes germs.
Students applied a dime-sized amount of Glo Germ cream to their hands and rubbed it thoroughly over all areas.
Using a black light, students were then able to see the areas where germs remained on their hands. After observing the results, students washed their hands using proper handwashing techniques and then re-checked their hands under the black light to see how many germs remained.
This hands-on activity helped students visually understand the importance of thorough and proper handwashing in preventing the spread of germs and maintaining good health. Here are just a few of my students applying the germ cream and rubbing it in their hands.

Please welcome James Luman to Lackland ISD! He teaches 6th Social Studies and 7th Texas History and will also coach the Stacey varsity track team. Mr. Luman is an Army veteran and is married with three children.
- Where are you from originally? I was born and raised in East Texas.
- Where did you go to college? I am a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio earning a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and then I earned a Master of Science in Sport Management from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
- How long have you been teaching? 12 years
- What other schools have you taught at? I taught and coached in Seguin ISD, Richardson ISD, and Ferris ISD.
- Is education your first profession, or have you done other things? I was in the United States Army from 1997-2003. I worked in construction while in college and as a subcontractor for Rack Space before teaching.
- What are some of your hobbies or favorite activities outside of school? I love golf, camping, and fishing.
- What’s a fun fact about you that most people wouldn’t guess? I love to cook
- What are you most excited about this school year? Getting to know the district and being able to teach Social Studies and Texas History as well as coach track.

This week, our fourth and fifth graders learned about the Bluebonnet Book voting in Texas. We will be reading books selected by the Texas Library Association and choosing our favorite in January. We had fun exploring some of the twenty new titles that were nominated. Students in third -fifth grade are able to vote if they read 5 of the titles by our voting date.
Our younger Eagles learned the parts of a book before making their selections. They also spent some time building in the library. We are all looking forward to the upcoming Book Fair with Literati. It will begin on Monday, September 28th and flyers will go home with more details next week. Happy reading!
