The Lackland Independent School District community came together today to honor the victims, survivors, and heroes of September 11, 2001, marking the 25th anniversary of the tragedy.
As a school district uniquely tied to the military, the day holds deep significance for our students, staff, and families. Across our campuses, students engaged in age-appropriate activities to learn about the history, resilience, and unity that defined the nation in the aftermath of the attacks.
Honoring History and Community Heroes
Students at Lackland Elementary and Stacey Junior/Senior High School participated in a district-wide moment of silence to start the morning. Teachers utilized specialized resources to help younger students understand the historical impact of 9/11 while focusing heavily on the courage of first responders, military service members, and ordinary citizens.
Given our location on Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, many of our families know firsthand the sacrifices required to protect our freedom. Today was not only a time for remembering history but also an opportunity to express our gratitude to the service members within our own school community.
Moving Forward with Unity
Through discussions, art projects, and writing prompts, our students reflected on how communities support one another during difficult times. The overarching theme of the day's lessons focused on unity, service, and kindness—values that remain central to the Lackland ISD mission.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our faculty for guiding these important conversations, and to our military families for their continued dedication to our country.

National Arts in Education Week, observed from September 13–19, serves as a nationwide celebration of the transformative power of creative disciplines in school systems across the country. Designated by Congress in 2010 through House Resolution 275, this annual celebration takes place during the week beginning with the second Sunday of September. It brings vital attention to the necessity of equitable access to arts education for every student, regardless of their socioeconomic or geographic background. Led nationally by organizations such as Americans for the Arts, the week unites educators, students, and advocates to emphasize how the arts cultivate well-rounded development.
This year’s national campaign centers on the theme, "Every Student, Every Community," drawing direct focus toward the systematic barriers that restrict artistic growth. Research from Americans for the Arts indicates that while nine out of ten Americans believe arts education is important, only about half agree that students have adequate access to these classes. Currently, more than two million students attend schools with zero access to arts education, a deficit that disproportionately impacts high-poverty urban and rural communities. Integrating disciplines like music, dance, theater, media arts, and visual arts into the core curriculum yields proven benefits that extend far beyond classroom walls. According to educational research, arts education drives student success across several key pillars:
Academic Achievement: Regular engagement with creative arts correlates with higher standardized test scores, enhanced critical thinking, and increased graduation rates.
Workforce Readiness: In an evolving global economy, 72% of business leaders cite creativity and collaboration as essential skills for employability—traits directly nurtured through the creative process.
Student Wellness: Artistic expression serves as a critical emotional outlet, fostering social-emotional learning, boosting mental health, and cultivating supportive school environments.
Cultural Awareness: Engaging in the arts deepens empathy, provides unique modes of communication, and builds a broader understanding of diverse cultures and histories.
Beyond local school showcases, exhibitions, and performances, National Arts in Education Week serves a critical legislative purpose. Advocates utilize this window to interact with school boards and elected officials, urging federal investments in programs such as the Arts Education for All Act and the National Endowment for the Arts. These legislative policies protect funding for the communities that rely on public programs the most, ensuring that creative opportunities remain an essential right rather than an exclusive privilege.

Building Strong Partnerships
Lackland ISD values teamwork between home and school. Parents, families, and community members work together to support student safety, learning, and emotional health. The district holds regular Town Hall meetings so families can share ideas and solve problems with school leaders.
Ways Families Can Get Involved
Families have many ways to take part in school life:

Because Lackland ISD serves a unique military community on Joint Base San Antonio, the district partners closely with the Joint Base San Antonio School Liaison Office. This connection provides extra support, counseling resources, and smooth transitions for families moving in and out of the district.

Parent Square Notifications
Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.
Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.
The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Both the JV and Varsity teams beat the Knippa Rock Crushers last Friday. The JV won 2 sets to 1 to come away with the victory. The varsity team lost the first set 25-19 and then went on to win the next three sets to complete the victory! The girls have a game this Friday vs. Center Point. The JV game starts at 4:00 followed by the varsity around 5:00. |
Since yesterday was testing day we moved skills to Friday. Today we are suturing bananas and students are seeing that this is much harder than on the plastic fake skin. Banana skin more closely resembles real skin in to which the stiches won't always come out perfectly and sometimes will tear. So they are having to work through their struggles to make it work, learning what works as they suture along.

Please welcome Chelsea Lewis to Lackland ISD! She previously was a substitute at Stacey and now teaches 5th grade at the elementary school.
How long have you been in education?
I graduated from Aquinas College and was hired in the state of Utah, I left my home of Michigan and moved across the country to start teaching. I taught 6 years in Utah, then taught 2 years in Virginia, subbed for a year here at Lackland/Stacey, and was hired to teach 5th grade this school year! So this is my 9th year teaching full time, but I’ve subbed a lot of years in between while I was a stay at home mom!
What is your favorite part of this district?
I love the military connection; my family is an active duty Air Force family. I love serving the students and families who live the same life that my children do!
What is your favorite subject to teach?
I love teaching Math, though this year I think Science has my heart!
If you were a Disney character what would you be?
If I was a Disney character I would be Moana! I love all things water and nature!
What influenced you to start teaching?
I always felt connected to children. I loved babysitting in middle and high school, then was able to get into classrooms starting in high school since I went to a small school like Stacey. I am one of the fortunate few who went to college knowing exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up!
Is there one place you would like to travel to?
I aspire to travel all over the place, but one place on my bucket list is Greece. I taught ancient civilizations in 5th grade and loved learning all about the ancient Greek cultures.
What is your go to midnight snack?
I love Limon Flaming Hot Cheetos!
What’s something you’ve always wanted to try?
I have always wanted to go surfing. Maybe one day we can get stationed close to the ocean!
If money and responsibilities didn’t matter, what would you be doing right now?
I’d be working with children in some capacity, but maybe I’d also be a world traveler!
If you could instantly become amazing at one thing, what would it be?
If I could instantly become amazing at something I would choose speaking Spanish. I really want to work on this skill!
What’s something you wish you could experience again for the first time?
I wish I could experience my study abroad in college again. My study abroad experience was to Tully Cross, Ireland; a small rural farming community. It was so memorable; if you ever get a chance to study abroad, do it!
If you could get any animal as a pet what are you getting?
I would get another black lab. They are the most loyal and loving pets!

Learning in action in Mrs. Guerrero's Kindergarten class!
Our kindergarteners are growing as readers, writers, scientists, and problem-solvers! Students worked together to design and build houses inspired by The Three Little Pigs while practicing the engineering design process.

A short week at school for us, but we filled every minute with activity and learning. Our younger Eagles learned about a fish that made a new friend and discovered the value of being yourself. Students made an effort to draw a fish and write the word fish, too. Our older students were exploring Lightbox digital books and considered the great outdoors in a fabulous book about being outside. Through inference and imagery, students were focused on trying to unfold the mystery of the tale. All of our students have access to Lightbox books through their Classlink every day. Check it out!
We are preparing flyers for the upcoming Book Fair. We will host Literati here from September 27th - October 2nd. The on-line fair will open over the weekend if you would like to take a peek @ Literati.com/store. You are welcome to shop on-line or at our Book Fair in person. Be watching for a flyer next week. Our Fair will have some wonderful books and a few pencils and erasers for sale to benefit our school and to delight our students! Happy reading!
