patriot day
Sept. 11, 2001, changed more than the skyline of New York City - the attacks changed a generation of Americans, our Army and our world. That day's destruction and devastation did not condemn this country to a future filled with fear. No, this loss, as profound as it was, did not break the soul of this nation. It made us stronger. That day fortified Americans with pride and patriotism and created a spirit of service in the hearts of a new generation. That day fundamentally changed our nation and our Army for the better. We now observe Patriot Day annually on September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance for the thousands of lives lost in the 9/11 attacks.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), Congress designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day," and by Public Law 111-13 (April 21, 2009), Congress has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized "National Day of Service and Remembrance."
A Presidential Proclamation each year calls upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Americans are encouraged to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
DoDEA acknowledges -- with profound gratitude and appreciation -- all the brave, selfless heroes that tirelessly defend our freedom and make the great American educational experience possible.

hispanic
Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration of Hispanic and Latino history and culture. While we celebrate Hispanic and Latino communites beyond this month, from September 15 to October 15 we give extra recognition to the many contributions made to the history and culture of the United States, including important advocacy work, vibrant art, popular and traditional foods, and much more.
Hispanic Heritage Month provides an additional opportunity to explore the incredible impact Latinas and Latinos have had on the United States for generations. The Latino presence in America spans centuries, predating Spain’s colonization of what is now part of the United States, and they have been an integral part of shaping our nation since the Revolutionary War. Through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Treaty of Paris that followed the Mexican-American and Spanish-American wars, the United States gained territories in the Southwest and Puerto Rico. This incorporated the people of this area into the United States and further expanded the presence of Hispanic Americans.
Today, the Latino population in the United States today is over 60 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This makes up 18.9% of the total population and is the largest racial or ethnic group. Latinos continue to help fuel our economy and enrich our nation as entrepreneurs, athletes, artists, entertainers, scientists, public servants, and much more.

The Big Give

The Lackland ISD Education Foundation will be participating in the Big Give to raise money for senior scholarships and classroom grants.
The Big Give is the BIGGEST day of online giving in South Central Texas, raising in excess of $50 million dollars for the local nonprofit community over the past decade. During a single 24-hour period, residents from across our 15-county region and beyond will come together to support more than 400 nonprofits by making a donation to support the critical services they provide our community. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Big Give 2025 will return for our 12th anniversary of fundraising success on Wednesday September 17th at 6 PM thru Thursday September 18th at 6 PM. The early donation period will start on September 10th.
If you are willing and able to make a donation of any amount, please click on Lackland Independent School District - Foundation to make a donation. All donations are tax deductible.

ParentSquare

Lackland ISD continues to strive toward improving communication.

ParentSquare is a communication platform. Through the platform, you’ll be able to:

*Receive all district, school, and classroom communication via email, text, or app
*View the school and classroom calendar and RSVP for events
*Easily sign up to volunteer and/or bring items
*Securely receive important documents like report cards and other student documents

For the best ParentSquare experience, we recommend that you download and install the app. The name is ParentSquare, and it can easily be found in your device’s app store. If you don’t have a device, no need to worry: the platform is capable of both text and email, and you can log on via the web as well. ParentSquare receives its contact information from the Ascender Parent Portal. Please take a moment to make sure that you have the latest contact information on file there.
Parent Square Notifications

Under General Announcements, you can select how often you want to receive notifications for posts. Select Off, Instant or Digest notifications.

Off:no notifications about posts will be sent to you. Emergency Alerts and Notices will still be sent. School Alerts will still be sent if turned on.
Instant:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification every time a notice or message is sent.
Digest:you'll receive an email and/or text and/or an app notification once a day in the evening with all posts from that day.

The default setting is typically Digest, so that you receive all notices and post messages in one convenient notification once a day. All emergency notifications still come through instantly, and a school can override settings as needed for an urgent message.

Spanish Club

Parents of Laura Figueroa Mendieta, Lady Brisset Mendieta Pulido, and Jorge Mauricio Figueroa Colmenares recently joined our Spanish Club to provide students with a meaningful cultural experience. With the support of Mrs. Saario and Mr. Ochoa, the afternoon was filled with learning, community, and delicious food.
Mr. Jorge Figueroa and Mrs. Mendieta generously prepared traditional Colombian arepas, a dish that holds deep cultural significance in Colombia. Students not only enjoyed tasting this specialty but also had the chance to participate in making their own. As they worked alongside our guests, students learned about the history of the arepa, the techniques used to prepare it, and its importance in Colombian families and communities.
This hands-on experience gave students the opportunity to connect language learning with authentic cultural traditions. Events like this allow students to deepen their understanding of the Spanish-speaking world in a way that is interactive, memorable, and engaging.
We are truly grateful to Mr. Figueroa and Mrs. Mendieta for sharing their time, talents, and culture with our students. Their generosity created a unique opportunity for our Spanish Club members to come together and experience the richness of Colombian tradition through food.

Meet Mr. Avila!

avila
By Harper Higley, 9th Grade
Joshua Avila teaches 7th grade ELA, Lit. Lab & 7th ELA Honors.

1. What is your favorite book to teach?
My favorite book to teach is "A Christmas Carol." I love this
book, because it's about my favorite holiday (Christmas) and it
is always a great reminder to my students that we always have
to be helpful in our community, and give help to the people who
are in need. I also enjoy it, because I read the play with my
students, so it's a lot of fun to read.

2. Why did you choose to teach English?
I chose to teach English because I love reading, writing, and
talking. So teaching English seemed like a good fit for me than
any other subject.

3. What is your advice for any middle schooler that says they don’t like
reading?
Don't stop reading. Read a book, if you don't like it, then grab
another, and if you don't like that one just grab another until you
find the one that fits best to your liking. It's like trying on different
outfits before going out to a party, you have to find the one you
are comfortable with. Secondly, just go with the flow of the story,
use your imagination and let the story become what you
imagine of it!

4. How many years have you been teaching?
This is my 5th year teaching middle school English

5. What brought you to Lackland ISD?
I was just searching for a better opportunity, and found that
Lackland ISD was hiring, so I gave it a shot, and here I am
today. 🙂

6. What is a book that has significantly impacted you?
A book that has most significantly impacted me is one called
Fahrenheit 451. It's a wild story where it is illegal to read, and all
books are set on fire if they are found. The story follows a group
of people who are trying to preserve the final few books before
they are gone forever. This book impacted me because I
realized the importance of preserving literature, and what our
world will become if we don't preserve the art of literature.
7. What are some things that were cool when you were in 7th grade?
i. Silly band bracelets
ii. Rainbow Loom Bracelets
iii. Wearing all black
iv. Super Smash Bros
v. Call of Duty
vi. Halo (the video game)
vii. Nintendo Wii (it had just been released)
viii. One Direction - the boy band

my middle school)

shadow/liner
1. Frosted hair tips or jet-black hair
2. Pumped up hair with excess hair spray
3. Having a lot of clips, multi-color hair braid
extensions, and stuff in your hair
4. Wearing 2-3 layers of collared shirts on top of
each other
5. Wearing a long sleeve shirt under a t-shirt
6. Bling and bedazzled shirts and sweat pants -
specifically anything that was of the Bebe or
Guess brand

Today the kids had fun with a Sorting Relay! 🎲 They raced in teams to sort picture cards into solids, liquids, and gases, and it was a great way to review what we’ve been learning. The activity helped them remember that solids keep their shape, liquids take the shape of the container, and gases spread out to fill their space.

The kids team building activity was taking plastic bags and working together to put air in them and building a tower that could stand on its own. This team building activity we learned while in Colorado this summer. The kids had a lot of fun and they kept going till they built their towers.

I’m beyond excited to finally have my ELAR students who enjoyed getting to know one another with a scavenger hunt. Library Scoop

Our youngest Eagles explored colors through the avenue of trains this week. We used geometric shapes to build trains during our library time. Our first and second graders went on a book hunt with a chant about finding a good fit book, and our older students explored categories in the fictional genre. Fourth and fifth graders used dry erase paddles to share out some of the books they knew within the categories and finished a great fictional read aloud that teaches compassion. We have wonderful readers here at Lackland! We also had a visit from a member of the Department of Public Safety. Great week!
